Is someone's opinion about a social issue made more or less valid by the fact that they're directly involved in that issue?

Example: Would opinions about immigration from Mexico amongst residents of border states generally be more valid than opinions from people who live in, say, Maine or Idaho? You could say an opinion made more valid because of personal experience and first-hand observation of the problem. ...but you could also say that the opinion is made less valid because being directly involved in a situation makes it far more difficult to view the problem objectively.
