WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Joining a growing list of critics, Sen. Mark Dayton on Wednesday called on Education Secretary Rod Paige to resign after Paige described the nation's largest teachers' union as 'a terrorist organization.' Paige apologized for making the remark earlier this week, saying he used 'an inappropriate choice of words' when discussing the National Education Association (NEA). But Dayton, D-Minn., said Paige has done 'very little' to improve public schools and should now step aside because of his gaffe. 'I think that the comment he made was so far beyond the pale that he would best serve the cause of public education in this country by resigning,' Dayton told reporters. Paige is under increased attack on many fronts. A day after calling for Paige's resignation, U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum, D-Minn., a member of the Education Committee, began asking other members of Congress to sign a letter to President Bush to urge him to ask Paige to step down. And NEA President Reg Weaver asked Bush to get rid of Paige immediately. Speaking for the union's 2.7 million members, Weaver said Paige 'has insulted them, this time beyond repair, with words filled with hatred.'
