Is Pat Buchanan more influential as a politician or as a TV commentator?

Pat Buchanan represents the extreme right wing of American politics, carefully walking the fine line between legitimate and extreme views. He served as a political advisor to Richard Nixon and later served as communications director for Ronald Reagan. He failed to gain the Republican nomination for President several times before breaking with the Republican Party In 2000 in order to run as the nominee from the Reform Party. He is currently working as a news commentator and political analyst for a major cable news network opposite his co-host Bill Press on the show Buchanan and Press, which is on the airs weekdays at 2 EST on MSNBC.
