Is an 'intervention' that infringes on the person's right to choose unethical?

Intervention is critical in the treatment of individuals suffering from chemical dependency problems. If not identified and treated early, substance abuse frequently results in serious family/relationship problems, health issues, unemployment, financial stress, and expensive interaction with the legal system. Early intervention is a valuable key in the recovery process and it brings hope to individuals and families in crisis. Yet AA says in it's first step:1. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable....the first step is admitting you have a problem. Is an intervention forcing the issue before the person is ready?
