Several companies have begun to produce wallets, handbags and shoes from salmon skin -- which has long been used as leather by the natives of the Pacific Northwest. One firm that sells salmon leather is Seattle-based Ivory Jack's Trading Company, which uses skins from the large Chum salmon. Tanning salmon skins takes more than twice as many steps as tanning cow hide and it's a messy business because of the wetness of the skin.
