I was reading the news today and came across two stories about animals - one was the birds that have been caught in the oil spill off Spain, and the other was about a dog that died in a house fire in Kansas City. I realized I felt worse reading those stories than I did reading about the 50 people killed in a riot tonight or the dozen or so people killed by a suicide bomber this morning. Are we just desensitized to violence towards humans because we read about it every day?
