Like they own their cat or dog. Parents can strike their children, choose their children's religion, make the child's healthcare choces, decide what (if) to tell them about reproduction, etc. There even the belief amoung some that if the child commits an illegal act, the parents should be fined or jailed - like a person who's dog bites someone. And, if so, when does this ownership end? Gradually, as the child gets older? Abruptly, at age 18 or 21?
