ISTANBUL (AFP) - A Turkish cotton farmer looking to boost his income has come upon an unlikely source to tap for money: get tourists to pick his crop and earn even more. Mustafa Ozturk's brand of 'alternative' tourism earns him 30 euros ($34) a head per person per week, and it has proven a roaring success, as he now counts about 500 cotton pickers a week. The 40-year-old, who lives outside the Mediterranean coastal resort of Antalya, saw most of his fields flooded after a dam was built nearby four years ago. His meager cotton crop was bringing him only three billion Turkish lira (less than $2,300) a year - and so he switched to tourism. In only two months, he has harvested 20 billion lira from willing Belgian, Dutch and German vacationers. The tourists 'want to experience something other than the beach and sun,' Ozturk told AFP by telephone.
