Do you believe that a person's preference for MySpace or Facebook is indicative of their social class?

In a Newsweek article on the differences between Facebook and MySpace, Danah Boyd, a researcher at the Berkeley School of Information, suggests social class is the main determining factor in aligning with Facebook versus MySpace. Her research on online behavior reveals that MySpace is the “preferred digital hangout for outsiders—burnouts, punks, emos, Goths and gangstas,” as well as for “Hispanic and immigrant teens.” Boyd suggests that middle and upper class teenagers generally gravitate towards Facebook, which was originally created at Harvard. The creators of MySpace rejected these classifications; they claimed many people are actually users of both sites and further MySpace is more widespread with 70 million users, whereas Facebook has around 28 million. The MySpace advantage is the freedom to design one’s own page, whereas Facebook’s “more-stringent template enforces a spartan design ethic.”
