Do shows about careers that have depraved main characters reflect poorly on the industry as a whole?

Some firefighters and Paramedics get a bit huffy about shows like 'Rescue Me' and 'Saved' in which the characters are less then prefect (sexually immoral, problems drinkers, gamblers, and drug-users, their reckless regard for their own safety) are represented as the 'heroes' of such shows.
