Do you tend to judge movie remakes on their own merits, or do you judge them based upon how they compare to the original?

I try to judge remakes on their own merits, but I usually can't do it. If a remake is an above-average movie on its own, but is horribly crappy compared to the original, I'll normally just consider it to be a horribly crappy movie altogether.
