Do you think reading out loud in an advanced placement English class is necessary?

I don't mean an occassional thing, or during a play or something like that. I'm talking about spending a period reading out loud from the book we're assigned to read and probably doing that once a week. Maybe every other day we'd spend half a period reading out loud. I just think there are more productive things an AP english class could be doing with its time.
