Is 'favorite teacher' a designation that requires some time and distance to be more meaningful?

In other words, would a veteran fifth grade teacher be more flattered by his former students returning to say he was their favorite teacher than he would be if his current students said the same thing? From the student side of things, is it taken more seriously if a seventh grader calls her third grade teacher her favorite as opposed to a seventh grader saying one her current teachers is her favorite?
