Westfield students face punishment for handing out candy and religious messages By Adam Gorlick, Associated Press, 12/31/2002 WESTFIELD, Mass. -- A group of Westfield High School students who passed out candy canes and religious messages to classmates before Christmas will likely be disciplined when they return to school from winter vacation. The students say their rights to free speech and expression were violated when they were told not to deliver the candies and attachments, and may take legal action against the school if they're punished. But administrators say the issue is about following rules, not religious or speech discrimination. 'It has nothing to do with religion or expression,' Superintendent Thomas McDowell said.
