Do you think most people can handle major changes to their world view?

If there's some sort of discovery that totally alters or even debunks a persons point of view on life, will they be able to adapt? Or will they just rationalize it so it fits into their own ideals? No, I don't intend this to be a question than ends up being another Atheist vs. Christian Steel Cage Match, but I know it will anyway.
