Do you think the writers and singer of 'Tie a yellow ribbon' are proud that their song has turned into a universal symbol in the US?

Oh, tie a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree It's been three long years Do you still want me? If I don't see a ribbon round the old oak tree I'll stay on the bus Forget about us And put the blame on me If I don't see a yellow ribbon Round the old oak tree Now the whole damn bus is cheering And I can't believe I see A hundred yellow ribbons hangin Round the old oak tree Written in written by Irwin Levine and Larry Brown. It is based on the true story of a convict retuning from jail. Levine and Brown got the story from a 1971 article in The New York Post, and changed some of the details. The yellow ribbon became a National symbol in 1980 when Americans put them on trees to remember the hostages being held in Iran. Ten years later, a group called Visual AIDS convinced people attending the Tony Awards to wear small red ribbons as a symbol of AIDS awareness. Soon, many causes produced ribbons with different colors to raise money and awareness. The yellow ribbon is currently used as a symbol of support for the troops in Iraq.
