Both types of firefighters answer the same types of calls, fire, rescue, and medical. However, paid firefighters work 24 hour shifts, and then they are off for 48 hours to do what they want. Volunteer Firefighters have pagers, and if someone needs their services, dispatch sends out a page at any time, day or night, and those who are free to answer the call rush to the station to get the trucks, or run to the call in their personal vehicle. Also, paid firefighters have formal training and schooling. They are staffed by professionals who are paid for their services. Most Volunteers are average citizens (high school kids, shop owners, businessmen, etc), trained by their department, who do this to help their community (and have a little fun).
