Survival in this case is when you just go for what's available even if it's not really your interest. You're only working at whatever job it is to put food on the table and make ends meet. Going for happiness is simply choosing a career because you enjoy it, even if you know that you'll be significantly financially challenged due to its life-unaccomodating pay.
