Has the 17th amendment to the US Constitution done more harm than good?

The Senate is the house of congress that represents each state equally giving 2 Senators to each state. It’s not to be confused with the House of Representatives which give more congressmen to states with larger populations. Approval of both houses is necessary to pass a law. The 17th amendment gives us popular election of senators. Before 1913 when the 17th amendment was passed senators were appointed by the state legislatures. The benefit of the 17th amendment is that senators represent the citizens of their state directly rather than representing the government that represents the citizens of that state. The downside is that it cuts the state governments out of federal legislation, thereby taking power away from your home state and centralizing power in Washington DC.
