Do you think exaggerated traits in animals have evolved due to a runaway female fancy?

Many animals display traits that appear to offer no survival advantage, in some cases have the opposite effect such as the peacocks tail restricting their agility and thus their ability to escape predators. Explanations for this come from sexual selection, a term first raised by Charles Darwin, that the traits are selected for due to a preference within the species, usually by the female.
