In a complex speech in the German city of Regensburg, the German-born head of more than one billion Roman Catholics implicitly denounced links between Islam and violence particularly in regard to jihad, or 'holy war'. Quoting a 14th-century Byzantine emperor on Prophet Mohammed, founder of the Muslim faith, the pope said: 'He said, I quote, 'Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.'' The pope's official spokesman said later Benedict respected Islam but rejected violence motivated by religion. The explanation, however, failed to quell Muslims' fury.
