Do you think moral judgements and physical cleanliness operate using the same psychological mechanisms?

Zhong and Liljenquist (2006) showed that: a) Participants who recalled a personal unethical deed were more likely to generate cleanliness related words when prompted with word fragments (e.g. s__p could be soap or step) b) Participants who read a story about an unethical deed were more likely to rate cleaning products as desirable, and were more likely to accept a free gift of a cleansing product over a neutral gift (rated to be equally as desirable by controls). Schnall, Benton & Harvey (2008) reported that participants, who physically cleansed themselves after watching a physically disgusting film clip, rated moral transgressions as less severe in a subsequent task compared to a control group .
