Do you try to use the word 'and' in place of 'but' in order to sound less negative?

For example, saying, 'Pearl is a nice name and I don't know anyone else with that name' instead of saying, 'Pearl is a nice name, but I don't know anyone else with that name'. Using 'and' makes Pearl sound like a unique name, whereas using 'but' makes it sound strange.
