Billions of dollars are paid annually to farmers in exchange for growing nothing. Sound ludicrous? The reasoning is that if too many farmers grow the same crop, prices will fall and farmers won't make enough money. There is absolutely no reason why that land can't be used for growing something else, fuel crops such as hemp or algae, for example.
