Would raising taxes on alcohol make any difference to the number of people binge drinking?

A Tory policy group has put forward proposals to combat binge drinking by raising the tax on alcohol by 7 pence on a pint. The Social Justice Policy Group said the move would raise an extra £400m a year, which could be used to fund treatment of alcohol abuse. David Cameron tasked the group with producing social policy ideas to mend what he called 'broken' society. The proposals are not binding and it's thought unlikely that Mr Cameron will back them.
