Until they passed a law against it, I had never heard of the trend known among teenagers as 'trunking' – that is, riding as a passenger in a moving car while locked in the trunk. Frankly, I assumed that such a thing was already illegal. And besides, unless you're trying to sneak into a drive-in theater, of which there aren't many left anyway, or you're an illegal immigrant trying to slip across the border, which is already against the law, why would anyone with the I.Q. of an egg timer want to ride in the dark, coffin-like confines of a car trunk in the first place? So I figured the anti-trunking law – one of 910 new laws enacted in California last year – was just another law designed by legislators with too much time on their hands to fix something that most people never even thought was a problem. But then I asked the 16-year-old daughter of some friends of mine about the alleged teenage 'trunking' trend. And she knew exactly what I was talking about...
