University of Guelph animal-welfare researcher Georgia Mason said recognizing zoos cause shortened life spans could mark the end of a long-standing debate about the physical and mental well being of zoo elephants. Researchers found Asian elephants living in European zoos have approximately half the average life span of elephants born into the logging industry in Myanmar. Similarly, not a single African elephant in a European zoo has reached the age of 50 whereas around 1/3 of the African elephants living in Amboseli National Park in Kenya reach 50 or older. The researchers found an increased risk of death in the four years after Asian elephants were transferred between zoos. Surprisingly, elephants conceived and born in a zoo also have a greater risk of dying early in adulthood than animals imported from the wild...
