It seems that in most Western cultures, no matter the language, names ending in "o" or "e" are considered male, and those with an "a" at the end are female. J.R.R. Tolkien had a problem with this when he wrote The Lord of the Rings, for by according to the strict linguistic rules he had set up for himself, his main character should be named "Froda". He understood that this might sound weird, or even create some confusion, so he wisely changed it to "Frodo".
