Is there some truth in the saying 'A young man who isn't a socialist hasn't got a heart; an old man who is a socialist hasn't got a head'?

This quote has been attributed to a number of people (e.g. David Lloyd George, Disraeli, Shaw, Churchill, or Bertrand Russell) with variations like 'If you are not a socialist at 20, you have no heart, if you are one at 40 you have no brain'.
