Schoolgirls in Britain are to be vaccinated against the human papillomavirus (HPV) that causes cervical cancer from 2008, ministers have announced. All 12 and 13-year-old girls will be offered vaccines followed by a wider campaign for girls aged up to 18. HPV causes around 70% of cases of cervical cancer, which kills more than 1,000 women in the UK each year. The move has been hailed by health campaigners but others have expressed concerns that providing a jab to protect against a sexually transmitted infection to children at a young age might encourage promiscuity.
