Were the television sitcoms of the 1980's more socially conscious than the ones that are presently on the air?

Episodes that come to my mind: On Diff'rent Strokes, there was an episode dealing with child molestion and kidnapping. On The Facts of Life, there were episodes on child neglect. That show with Nell Carter had an episode discussing minstrel shows and blackface. Aside from all that, there were the routine after-school specials that dealt with everything from eating disorders to child abuse to epilepsy. These shows were all geared toward children.
