Do you make an effort to find out about a store's return policy before or after making a purchase?

The store at which I work has one of nastiest, most notorious return policies in the world. It is posted all over the place, and at the bottom of the customer's receipt. Many do not make an effort to read the policy before purchasing, instead waiting until the transaction has finished to inquire... and then they look at me like I'm crazy.
