Do you think that by the senior years of high school, pupils should be taught on a basis of trust (see story for details)?

At this age, the pupil needs to learn to be independent and yet is still told exactly what to learn, when to learn, etc, when they should be given the freedom to make decisions about their education, and learn from the mistakes they make. What do you think?
