Seadly staph infections are on the rise in schools, so state school and medical officials are taking steps to alert the public about ways to avoid being infected. Staphylococcus aureus infections are often difficult to treat, and some are now resistant to the antibiotics used to treat patients. Schools throughout the country are reporting outbreaks of staph infections, particularly among athletes who share equipment, uniforms and towels. The antibiotic-resistant strain is sometimes associated with serious skin problems and blood disorders and led to 19,000 deaths last year.
