Do you think cartoons would be better if the characters grew up with the audience?

One thing that always bothered me when watching my favourite cartoon characters, was that I kept getting older, and they stayed the same age. I outgrew a lot of my favourite cartoons that stayed in the 'kiddie' realm, but perhaps if they had grown up too, it might of made for more interesting, long term viewing?
