If you were getting married this year, would you avoid doing it on Saturday, the 11th of September?

It's getting a bit late in the planning season to schedule that September wedding. Unless, perhaps, you're interested in Saturday the 11th. There seem to be openings around town that day. September, with its comfortable temperatures, is a big wedding month in Kansas City. Churches and reception halls usually are booked solid. This year, though, many couples are shying away from Sept. 11, the first time since the terrorist attacks that 9/11 has fallen on a Saturday. When Laura Burgess and her fiancé studied the calendar for a mid-September wedding date, they ruled out the 18th because of a scheduling conflict. That's when Laura's mother, Judy Burgess of Leawood, piped up innocently: “What about the weekend before?” Whoa. The question drew wide eyes from Laura, and then Judy glanced down at the calendar. “Oh, my!” she said. The family decided instead on Aug. 14. At a recent bridal fair, they realized they weren't alone in their concern. At a vendor's booth, visitors were invited to make a tally mark next to their wedding dates. “There was not a single stroke on Sept. 11,” Judy said. At the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception downtown, just about every weekend gets booked for weddings. “Sometimes two a weekend,” said John Winkels, the cathedral's director of liturgy and music, “from now until (you know what) freezes over. But we do not have any weddings scheduled for Sept. 11.” Couples are concerned that the date would be the talk of the wedding, or worse, cast a pall on the proceedings and their future anniversary celebrations. “When you think about an invitation being mailed to 200 or 300 people with that date on it…” said Kindra Browne of Simple Elegance wedding planners in Olathe. Several big area caterers, including Arcadian Event Site and Catering, Brancato's Catering and Eddys' Catering, have no wedding receptions scheduled yet that Saturday.
