Talking about human intelligence, and assuming there are no other genetic/congenital/otherwise affecting factors (i.e. head trauma). Intelligence has frequently been linked to brain size, be it general intelligence and overall size (though this is disputed) or specific abilities and the size of corresponding brain areas. The general idea is that the more you use that part(s) of the brain/the more inherent ability you have, the larger they are, so the larger your skull is to accommodate it.
