THE father of Guantanamo Bay detainee David Hicks has welcomed news his son has won the legal fight to become a British citizen. The British Court of Appeal has refused further appeals from the British Home Office on the Hicks case. This means the Home Office, which has lost twice to Hicks's legal team, must resume the process of declaring Hicks to be a British citizen. His legal team hopes the Blair government will then fight for his release, as it did for nine other nationals held at Guantanamo Bay. Terry Hicks today said he was awaiting confirmation of the court decision in his son's case. But he said he was happy to hear the news from journalists. 'It is probably good news. At this point no-one has confirmed it with me yet,' Mr Hicks said from his Adelaide home. 'We are just hoping that the British government will now do something about getting him out.'
