U.S. to ban ephedra herbal supplements The Food and Drug Administration announced Tuesday it will ban the sale of performance-enhancing ephedra herbal supplements early next year, a watershed decision that comes just two days before a new California law barring the potentially lethal products takes effect. The FDA action will not sweep ephedra products off the market across America for several months, but officials are urging consumers to stop buying the over-the-counter stimulant immediately. The first federal ban on a dietary supplement could be the beginning of tougher oversight on the largely unregulated multibillion-dollar diet and nutritional supplement industry, which includes products like the depression-fighting St. John's-wort and memory-enhancing gingko pills. ''This is a great new year's present,'' said state Sen. Jackie Speier, D-San Francisco, who wrote the tough California law banning ephedra products that takes effect Thursday. ''This is an unregulated industry that has done nothing but place Americans at great risk.''
