Is it acceptable to call a group of people by their approximate skin color if they have not condoned it?

If people of African descent accept being referred to as 'Blacks,' most people would find this acceptable, but if they reject it, is 'Black' still an acceptable term? Is it still acceptable because it is descriptive, however approximate, or is it unacceptable because they have objected?
