About 500km above the Arctic Circle, the tiny port of Alta is best known for its 6000-year-old, World Heritage-listed rock carvings, which in the northern summer attract 1000 sightseers a day. In the northern winter these poignant images of reindeer, hunters and fishing boats are buried beneath a thick duvet of snow, but Alta is still pulling in the visitors, thanks to a global craze for ice hotels.
