Lenny Bruce turned comedy on its head. He was also one of America's most visible victims of censorship. He spent much of his professional career (in the 60's) fighting criminal charges of indecency and obscenity, and trying to find work when he had been blacklisted. But hardly a mere foulmouthed loudmouth, Lenny turned comedy and indecency into a philosophy, a way of living and an example to the rest of us. Because of Lenny's very real struggle in our not-too-distant past, we believe he is an excellent symbol of the dangers of censorship.
