In the late 80s, the 16-bit home computer revolution was taking off. The IBM-compatibles were starting to become respectable but not quite ready for gaming. The Macintosh was a high end, expensive graphics system. In a struggle for a 'third-system', these two systems became widely popular for people who just wanted to plug up a computer to the TV and be over with all this non-sense.
