Is a wounded healer an effective healer?

For example if the healer is not fully well, or still recovering from a sickness.. is he effective if he is trying to cure a similar illness that he hasn't recovered from yet? Does it give him greater understanding of the situation, thus greater empathy and healing ability? Usually referring to emotional/psychological illnesses rather than physical.
