Do you tailgate?

In learning to drive, I was taught to ask myself, 'If the car in front of me were to suddenly slam on its brakes, would I be able to stop without hitting them?' and use that as a guide to stay far enough behind the car in front of me. The five-hour course I took said to keep a certain number of car lengths between the two cars.
