That means approximately two people a day. Measures that could save lives have not been taken. Many consumers don’t know very much about foam and fabric when they buy a piece of furniture. What they really need to know is that most upholstered furniture is stuffed with highly flammable polyurethane foam and the fabric covering the foam may be flammable as well. Despite the extremely serious risks of these materials, only the state of California has laws ensuring the use of flame-retardant foam. And there are no federal laws requiring either foam or fabric to be less flammable. One possible method to avoid such fatal fires is the use of flame-retardant foam.
