Should controlled-atmosphere killing be implemented anywhere animals are slaughtered?

McDonald's Corp. said it was considering whether to make its chicken suppliers use a new, more humane slaughter method following a proposal by one of its shareholders. The firm is carrying out a feasibility study into requiring suppliers to switch over to controlled-atmosphere killing (CAK), a technique that a leading animal rights group with shares in McDonald's had championed. With CAK, chickens are put in a controlled environment in which their oxygen is slowly replaced with argon or nitrogen, putting the birds to sleep quickly and painlessly, according to PETA.
