If you found out your basement floor tiles may have asbestos in them, would you want to immediately rip them up, or take other precautions?

We are remodeling our basement into an inlaw suite, and the guys who came to put the new carpet in told my wife that there is a chance that the 50 year old tiles have some asbestos in them. My wife wants to pay a couple hundred to have them ripped out; while I contend that by putting a chemical sealer on them, and padding and carpet on top, there is no issue here.
