Do you think that Catholicism warped humanity's view of what the true Christian message really is?

I mean back when it all began before Luther, kinda why Luther did what he did. but to a stronger degree. I mean there are so many Pagan references in Catholicism and now many modern christian sects, that its just plain rediculous.
