Smart power strips reduce idle power wasting, "vampire power", by cutting off power to all the outlets completely when the control is turned off. When you turn your Computer off, it cuts power to the monitor, printer, router, etc. When you turn your TV off, it cuts power to all video game consoles, DVD player, etc. And there's a few plugs for things that you don't want to lose power with the control.
